With Thanksgiving right around the corner, now is the time for you to start planning how you and your co-parent are going to share the holiday with the children. Under normal circumstances, the conversation would entail what each other’s plans are for the Thanksgiving. However, the pandemic has shifted the conversation and new topics need to be discussed.
When sitting down with your co-parent to discuss a schedule for Thanksgiving, here are some things to contemplate:
What is each parent’s degree of comfort with regards to spending Thanksgiving with relatives and other individuals?
Where will you each be spending Thanksgiving?
Other than yourself and the children, who else will be in attendance for Thanksgiving?
What was the anticipated schedule parenting time arrangement for Thanksgiving 2020?
After considering these important questions, you should consider some options so that you and your children can enjoy Thanksgiving:
Plan A: If both parties are comfortable with spending Thanksgiving with their relatives and other individuals, you can follow the parenting time schedule that would have occurred in 2020, if it were not for the pandemic.
Plan B: If one parent is not comfortable with spending Thanksgiving with relatives and other individuals, then you both agree to spend the holiday with the children at your respective homes. The parent that would not normally have had parenting time on Thanksgiving can share the holiday with the children in the AM. Then, the parent who was to have parenting time on the holiday spends time with the children in the PM. This way each parent can have time with the children and continue their traditions or create new ones.
Plan C: If neither parent is comfortable spending Thanksgiving with relatives and other individuals and they are on good terms with each other, you can choose to spend the holiday at one of your homes together as a family. This alternative is only viable as long as the children understand that you and your co-parent are not reconciling.
We at Seiden Family Law wish everyone a happy, healthy and peaceful Thanksgiving!
